How to take care of your newborn baby

For the new mothers, here we give some tips about how to handle a newborn baby.

  1. Help your newborn get enough rest and sleep:Newborns should get lots of rest to continue growing healthy and strong — some can rest up to 16 hours a day.

Some babies may have their days and nights confused when they are born. If your baby is more active and awaken at night, try to limit nighttime stimulation by keeping the lights dim and your talking low so that  your baby begins a normal sleeping cycle at day time.Make sure that you place your baby on his back while he is sleeping. The mother should alternate the position of your baby’s head — whether it’s leaning to the left or the right — to eliminate the “soft spot” that can appear on a baby’s face if he spends too much time sleeping with his head in one position.

  1.  Diapering – do’s and don’t’s : You can either use clothes or disposable diapers. You may have to change the diapers at least 10 times a day.  After each bowel movement or if the diaper is wet, change the diaper. Never leave your baby on with wet diapers as it will cause many skin problems including diaper rashes. Applying an ointment is a good way to avoid diaper rashes. If you are using cloth diapers, make sure that you wash them properly using a fragrance free detergent. Also, find some time to leave the baby undiapered for sometime every day.
  2. Bathing your baby : Take special care while bathing your newborn. During the first weeks, give your baby sponge bath. After few months, you can shift to tub bath.
  3. Be careful while handling your new born : Take special care while bathing your tiny and fragile baby. Wash or sanitize your hands properly before handling the baby so as to avoid any chance of infections. While holding the baby, make sure that you support his back and head. Avoid shaking your baby as this may lead to internal bleeding.
