India kicks off the ODI series against Sri Lanka with a victory
Owing to a scintillating performance from Shikhar Dhawan and Virat Kohli, India clinched an easy 9-wicket win against Sri Lanka in the first match of the ODI series. Shikhar Dhawan brought up the 11th century of his ODI career. He was dismissed for 132 runs from 90 balls but he had ensured India’s victory by then. The partnership between Dhawan and Virat Kohli saw India through to the victory. Kohli smashed an unbeaten 82 from 70 balls.
India won the toss and asked the host to bat first. The opening pair Niroshan Dickwella and Danushka Gunathilaka provided Sri Lanka with a good start. Niroshan Dickwella notched up his half century but fell for 64. Gunathilaka made 35 runs before Yuzvendra Chahal removed him. Kusal Mendis scored a crucial 36 runs to boost Sri Lankan innings. But, the Indian bowlers trumped the Sri Lankan batsmen, dismissing the tail end cheaply. Angelo Mathews hung around as much as he could to score 36 runs, which helped Sri Lanka sail past 200. Sri Lanka folded their innings for 216 runs, a score that was a bit too less for Sri Lanka to be happy about. Axar Patel picked up 3 wickets whereas Jasprit Bumrah, Yuzvendra Chahal, Kedar Jadhav claimed 3 wickets each.
Sri Lanka found a ray of hope when they managed to pick up the wicket of Rohit Sharma quite early in the innings. But resolute Shikhar Dhawan and the most dangerous batsmen in the world right now Virat Kohli, teamed up to fetch a comfortable victory for India. India reached the target in just 28.5 overs. India leads 1-0 in the 5- match series. The next match is scheduled on 24th of this month.
