Punjab pulls off a convincing victory in their inaugural match
Kings XI Punjab managed to overpower Rising Pune Supergiant in their first match of this IPL season. Punjab chased the target of 164 runs set by Pune in just 19 overs. This is the Pune’s 8th straight loss after batting first in an IPL match. Rising Pune Supergiant was riding high on confidence after defeating Mumbai Indians in their previous match. Punjab should thank the skipper Glenn Maxwell for the victory, as it was his sterling contribution that fetched the victory. Maxwell won the toss and decided to send the Rising Supergiant to bat first. Punjab bowlers succeeded in keeping the Pune score within bounds as Pune set a target of 163.
Ben Stokes gave much- needed incentive to his Pune team by scoring a half- century. Manoj Tiwary’s fireworks in the final phase of the innings also helped Pune post a decent score of 163. He made 40 runs and remained not out till the end of the Pune innings. Stokes and Tiwary weaved a crucial fifth-wicket partnership of 61 runs from 37 balls.Punjab began their innings on a positive note as the Punjab openers chalked up 27 runs from 3 overs. Punjab scored 73 runs from 10 overs at the loss of 2 wickets. Punjab required 91 runs to win the match but Maxwell comfortably led his team to the target. He racked up 44 runs from just 20 balls and formed a partnership of 79 runs with David Miller. David Miller scored 30 runs from 27 balls. Punjab reached the target in the penultimate over to pick up a victory.
